Also known in the calligraphy world as "Unkai Onuki", Mr. Onuki started Japanese calligraphy at the age of three and became a certified instructor of the Japan Calligraphy Education Society by the age of twenty. Even today, he continues to exhibit his works and has received numerous awards such as grand prizes in various calligraphy competitions as well as the Minister of Education Award. Another one of his passions is coffee which was born from the brews he would make during breaks in long calligraphy sessions. In 2018, he managed to achieve the difficult task of being certified as a "Coffee Professional"* by one of Japan’s leading coffee companies. He is constantly working to refine his knowledge of coffee and strives to make the perfect cup.
Calligraphy and coffee give Mr. Onuki endless enjoyment in his free time. They let him express his inner feelings and cherish the time he spends on them. Currently, he is trying to teach the appeal of calligraphy and coffee to as many people as possible. Through his desire to enrich the lives of the people around him, he works as a volunteer teacher of calligraphy at elementary schools and teaches calligraphy classes at seminars sponsored by a leading coffee company.
He believes that Japanese calligraphy is a worthwhile pursuit as it allows people to express their thoughts and emotions through the writing of characters. After learning the basics, anybody can have fun writing Japanese calligraphy. It is truly impressive to see the joy on his face when he talks about his two passions.
