Katsuhiro Fujimaki was chosen as one of the "Japan APN Ambassadors" by AWS, which has only 14 members(as of 2019) in Japan.
Here's his story of leading our company's AWS business.
Katsuhiro Fujimaki
Engineer
Cloud COE
Cloud Integration Office
Cloud Services Division
Business Cloud Services Group
He joined Hitachi Systems in 2006. After experiencing quality assurance activities for software and cloud services, he worked as a cloud SE. Taking the opportunity of dealing with customers in the distribution industry, he has become deeply involved in AWS * 1. He has acquired twelve AWS certifications, and has engaged in many AWS related activities including conducting training and community management both inside and outside the company. In FY 2020 he was ranked the second place of the "Japan APN Ambassadors" * 2 by AWS. Currently, he is active both inside and outside the company as an AWS specialist representing Hitachi Systems.
Fujimaki says forcefully. He is one of the most talented specialists in the cloud business at Hitachi Systems. But he wasn't originally the type to show such leadership, rather he was the type who hesitate to appeal in front of people. The turning point for Fujimaki was a project for a major distributor in Japan. The project was a big challenge to completely migrate on-premise business systems to AWS, and many top-level engineers from several companies joined the project. Fujimaki had some experience building clouds, but the engineers working on the project were specialists in a variety of fields. He was especially impressed by the knowledge of a SE in charge of the project leader. "Create value. Deliver its value to the customer" he encouraged project members many times and led the project with his excellent technical and management skills.
Fujimaki realized that his skills could not achieve same level of the project members’ skills. Until then, he believed that he had played important role in his company's duties as a person with superior technology, and was relied upon by customers and superiors. He was also confident as an engineer because he devoted himself to the task he was in charge of and was familiar with the product. However, his skills were not enough for the project.
This was the moment when Fujimaki changed his mind. Fujimaki realized that "I had a superficial understanding of AWS" and determined strongly that "I want to know more about AWS. I also want to enhance my own value by deepening my knowledge of our customers' business operations". From then, he spent a lot of time for researching and practicing AWS during his work and private time. Through these activities, he deepened his understanding of AWS and got into it.
It was very difficult for him to develop his skills between busy projects. However, Fujimaki, who hates to lose, thought to himself, "I don't want to lose to the project leader and other project members." and inspired himself to brush up his skills every day. By the end of the project, he had grown to become the team leader. As one of the best AWS engineers, he has gained recognition from customers and the project members.
Since then, Fujimaki has continued to make efforts for improving his skills steadily until now. As a result of his efforts, he obtained twelve AWS certifications and works as an in-house AWS engineer training instructor. In private, he also runs the AWS community and wrote and published several books on AWS. These efforts were recognized by AWS, and in FY 2019 he was ranked the second place among only 14 "Japan APN Ambassadors" (at that time). He is currently a leading AWS specialist in both name and reality.
"I will continue to develop my AWS related skills further to lead the AWS business of Hitachi Systems and to strongly drive the AWS business of the entire Hitachi Group." says Fujimaki. We look forward to his further success with expanding his work to global activities.
